Told across parallel lives and glittering skylines, Falcons is a novel of love and loyalty, identity and expectation — and the quiet rebellions that define who we become.

About

Inspired by the dynamic modern-day United Arab Emirates, Falcons is Julia’s debut fiction novel.

Falcons offers a nuanced portrait of contemporary life in the UAE, told through an intimate and deeply human lens —blending emotional interiority, cultural texture, and quiet undercurrents of geopolitical tension.

An upmarket, multi-POV novel, Falcons follows an intergenerational, multicultural cast of characters — Emirati, American, Iranian, Filipino, Indian, Bangladeshi, Afghan, and Chinese — whose intersecting lives unfold across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Washington, D.C.

Both intimate and expansive, Falcons situates personal stories within a rapidly transforming Gulf society, where ambition, identity, and belonging take shape against the backdrop of modernization and an evolving global order.

Falcons is a work-in-progress novel scheduled for completion in mid-2026.

Julia is open to working with literary agents and publishers who value place-driven storytelling, immersive world-building, and character-centered narratives rooted in complex political and cultural landscapes.

She also welcomes representation from agents and publishers experienced in international rights and the development of literary fiction for film and television adaptation.

Author’s Note

At the risk of sounding completely out of touch — I was on a plane from the Maldives back to Dubai when the idea hit me. I was so blissed out from the massages, seafood, and crystal clear water — it felt like a reset button had been pressed, returning me to my most open, receptive state.

As women, we are creators of life force, often in the form of a child. But for me, it was on that plane that an idea was conceived.

An intergenerational, multicultural cast of characters. A dynamic web of intersecting lives. A novel, told across parallel worlds and glittering skylines. I found myself wondering… how does this book not already exist?

And so, I set out to bring it into being.

I quickly and graciously accepted my role as the conduit, the channel, and the scribe for an idea that felt nothing short of divine. I can only count my blessings that it chose me to be the one to realize it.

For two years, I treated these characters as if they were my friends. Thankfully, they were extraordinary company as I served in an unaccompanied diplomatic assignment on the opposite side of the world from everything I knew.

As they lived with me, and I with them, it became clear: this was more than a book. It was a living story.

At times, it felt less like writing and more like watching a film. In my mind’s eye, each moment unfolded scene by scene — perhaps because it mirrored my everyday life in the UAE. That was my goal: to bring to life, both visually and emotionally, a world many have yet to experience for themselves.

As much as I hope to tell these characters’ stories, it is my sincere intention that the UAE might tell its own story through them.

I aspire for this book to embody the rich tapestry of people and cultures that make up the Emirates — an experiment in the sand that has surpassed all expectations. In just 54 years, the nation has truly accomplished the unimaginable.

To the falcon: no more worthy symbol could represent the UAE and this book. Your nobility, strength, and beauty — with a spirit at once wild and unwaveringly loyal — made you a constant source of inspiration I returned to time and again. May we admire you, revere you, and remember: within each of us soars a falcon of our own.
